Congratulations to our 2010 Scholarship Recipients

 

 

 Adrianne Bassett is an Early Childhood major at Northern Illinois University at DeKalb, IL.  While maintaining a full-time class schedule, Adrianne also has a full-time job to help defray her tuition and school expenses.  While attending Hyde Park High School, Adrianne served as an Assistant and Coordinator for the Step-Up mentoring program for freshmen.  She also participated in the Fisk Elementary Learning Disabilities Program as an Assistant and Tutor.   Adrianne enjoys teaching math to her classmates and friends and also helping small children.  Adrianne revels in the success and happiness of others.  Adrianne aspires to educate others, to become a leader, friend and most importantly, a teacher.

Lorin Childs is pursuing a degree in Television Production at Columbia College of Chicago.  Lorin is a member of the Television Arts Society at Columbia and enjoys theatre, producing and directing television shows and interacting with small children.  Lorin is very active in her church where she is the President of the Usher Board, Youth Group Event Coordinator and a member of the Outreach Ministry where they feed the homeless.   Lorin’s well-planned career aspirations include leveraging Columbia College’s relationship with Harpo Studios to gain an internship and position at Harpo Studios.  Her ultimate goal is the start of her own production company, named “My View” where she will share her perspective on life through producing quality television shows. 

 

Kierra Holmes is a senior at Rauner College Prep, Chicago, IL.  Kierra is Senior Council President, a member of the Early College Scholars and third-ranked Clarinet in the Wind Ensemble Band.  Kierra is very active in her church where she is an avid dancer for the Praise Dance Ministry and currently serves as the President of the Host and Hostess Committee.  In preparation for college, Kierra participated in a paid internship at University of Illinois in Urbana, Champaign where she worked with the Crop Science department and conducted an experiment testing the relationship between a mutant and wild type plant.  This fall Kierra will attend Oberlin College where she plans to study agricultural and biological sciences with the possibility of combining engineering.  Kierra aspires to become a scientist or engineer in the fields of agriculture or biological sciences. 

 
JoAnna Fernandez is a freshmen at DePaul University, Chicago, IL excelling in her pursuit of a degree in Art and Design and a minor in Advertisement.  Her first semester at DePaul University she made the Dean’s List.  JoAnna is an active member of the Students Together Are Reaching Success and Sisters Together Recognizing Our Never Ending Growth programs.  JoAnna enjoys art, philosophy and is very interested in politics.  JoAnna is very active in her community where she has participated in the Mikva Challenge – Active Citizens Project, 9th Ward Back to School Picnic, Parade and Bike Ride and she is also a member of Heifer International.  JoAnna’s long-term goal is to pursue a career in Advertisement. 
 

Milton Garrett, III is a senior at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, Chicago, IL.  Milton has been a varsity football starter, a talented basketball player and wrestler for the past 4 years.  Milton is a member of the National Honor Society, National Honor Roll, National FFA Member and Vice President of the school’s Bible Club.  Milton is very active in his church and currently participates in the Raising the Bar and Pathfinders organizations and participates as an usher/host for the past 6 years.  During this past summer, Milton participated in a summer paid internship at University of Illinois in Urbana, Champaign where he conducted an active laboratory scientific experiment.  Milton plans to attend University of Illinois – Champaign or Connecticut College where he will major and graduate with a degree relating to science.  Milton aspires to become  a working scientist preferably in the research and chemisty area of science.

 

Jermaine Lee is pursuing a Graphic Design degree at Columbia College of Chicago.  Jermaine is a member of the National Art Program and assists with numerous youth rallies and mentoring programs.  Jermaine is also a serious advocate for Chron’s Disease awareness by educating people whom are unknowledgeable with this disease.  Jermaine excels in his commitment to his studies as he balances his time between classes and a part-time job.  Upon graduating, Jermaine plans to attend graduate school at Illinois State University where he will major in business.  Jermaine’s love of art aspires him to pursue a career in the graphic design and arts field and utilize his degrees to start his own graphics company.

 
Keenan Smith is a senior at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, Chicago, IL.   Keenan enjoys math and is a talented athlete, participating on Varsity Basketball and Varsity Baseball for all 4 years of high school.  Keenan also serves as a leader for each sport and is a great example for his teammates in maintaining his commitment to his studies and balancing his time.  Keenan extends his competitive nature into the classroom where he challenges himself to become the number one student in his business classes.  Keenan has participated in numerous fundraisers and community projects.  Keenan has been granted acceptance from over 7 universities where he will major in Accounting.  Keenan aspires to pursue a career in Accounting.
 
 

JoVona Taylor attends Kenwood Academy, Chicago, IL.  JoVona plans to attend Barnard College in New York City where she will major in Journalism and/or English.  At Kenwood Academy, JoVona is the Editor –in-Chief of The Kaleidoscope Newspaper, a member of the National Honors Society and a member of the Ivy League Club.  JoVona has also performed numerous interviews and written a feature story for the Chicago Tribune’s The Mash Newspaper.  For the past 5 years JoVona has participated in the After School Matters program where she serves as an Advanced Apprentice.  JoVona aspires to pursue a career as a Journalist.
