Congratulations to our 2011 Scholarship Recipients



Sydney Corryn is a junior at Columbia College Chicago. As a journalism major, she hopes to write campaign memos and use her writing and organizing skills to bring change to today's communities.  She has a passion for politics, community development, culture, books and her church. She has worked for Streetwise, In These Times, Toni Preckwinkle's Campaign for Cook County Board President and the Gery Chico for Mayor Campaign.

She hopes to continue her involvement in the community by working for various community groups that are pushing for stricter gun laws, teen pregnancy prevention and education reform.  Sydney Corryn believes her life is a testimony of God's never-ending grace and unwavering favor.


Jasmine N. Johnsonis currently a sophomore attending Robert Morris University in Chicago, IL.  She is pursuing a degree in Health and Fitness Management.  Jasmine is involved in Women’s Basketball and has been on the Dean’s List for four consecutive quarters.  While attending high school, Jasmine was a member of the National Honor Society and she was on the Varsity Basketball and Track Team.

Joseph Laseter, is a senior at Kenwood Academy High School, Chicago, IL.  Joseph has been captain of his Track and Field and Cross Country Teams for the past 4 years. In addition to being a year round varsity athlete, Joseph is also president of his school’s National Honor Society, a member of The Brotherhood (a male-mentoring organization) and is his senior class valedictorian. He is also a part of The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program. Joseph’s avid hobby and 4 year passion is photography. He has earned awards and a perfect Advanced Placement score for his photography. Joseph plans to attend Dartmouth College or The University of Chicago where he will major and graduate with a degree relating to biology or psychology. Joseph aspires to become a genetics researcher or any type of doctor whose end goal is helping others.


Veronica R. MiddlebrooksI am currently a senior at Lake View High School. I am the president of my senior class as well as involved in the National Honors Society, Poetry Club, and a member of Lake View's (LTAB) poetry slam team. I enjoy singing, dancing, modeling, and playing the piano. I am a soprano in my school's Advanced Mixed Chorus as well as my church choir. I was the captain of the Pom Pom squad, and I am a local promotional and informal model. I plan to attend a four year university, majoring in biomedical sciences, and minor in music performance. My goal for the future is to become a pediatrician.


Tracy Lee Nunnery  I am eighteen years old with a twenty-five year old personality. I love to write poetry, dance, and have fun. I am very intelligent with a 4.16 GPA, straight A's, and I am number one in my class for the fourth year in a row. I am also a 1st degree black belt at the 3Circles School Of Karate which I have been a member of for twelve years. I love God just as much as I love my family.  I worked very hard to get where I am today and I am very grateful for all of my friends and family who stayed by my side with encouragement. I've had a paying job since my freshman year of high school so I could support myself and my family. I am now a senior in high school with three jobs while maintaining good grades in school. I am the beginning of perfection. Tracy Lee Nunnery is the name and I make sure no one forgets it!

Nuschia Tayloris only nineteen years old, but considers herself to be living a rich and exciting life. She is a freshman at Harold Washington College and enjoys learning and meeting new people. Nuschia has many hobbies, which include writing, scrapbooking, reading poetry and shopping. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Nuschia plans to get an associate’s degree from Harold Washington in the field of Childhood Development. She then plans to transfer to a four year university where she hopes to obtain her bachelors’ degree in Childhood Education.
