Congratulations to our 2009 Scholarship Recipients

Taurean JaMon Brewton

 Currently is a freshman at Lincoln University in MO pursuing a degree in Physical Education.  Taurean is involved in football, track and martial arts in which he is training for his black belt.  He is also a member of the Usher Board at his church.  While attending Luther South High School, Taurean served as President of the Student Body and graduated in the Top Ten of his class.


Akilah Chambers-Hill

 Currently is a senior at Homewood Flossmoor High School, Homewood, IL.  Akilah is a member of the National Honor Society, Speech Club and on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad.  She is very active in her church, where she sings in the choir and participates in the Youth Group.  Akilah plans to attend a four year university or college and major in Pharmacy and minor in Spanish.  Akilah aspires to become a licensed Pharmacist.


JoAnna Fernandez

  Currently attends Curie High School in Chicago, IL.  JoAnna likes to draw, paint and write poetry.  She will attend Depaul University where she will major in Art Theory and Practice.  She participates in various extra curricular activities in school including the Black Student Organization (B.S.O.), the Senior Executive Board (S.E.B.) and the Stained Glass club.  She is also an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate.  JoAnna’s long term goal is to pursue a career in Advertisement.


Ashley Kaye Harris

  Currently is a student at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi seeking a B.S. in Mass Communications, Graphic Design minor.  Ashley is a member of the National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) and Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.  She is also a member of Tiger Pride Connections and serves as a School Recruiter.  As a member of College Hill church, Ashley has volunteered for the toy, clothes and Voter Registration drives.  Upon graduation, Ashley plans to work for a major broadcasting company as an Advertising Producer.




Danielle LaDonna Lewis

Currently is a senior at William R. Harper High School in Chicago and is a member of The National Honor Society and is actively involved in the Leadership Academy. While at Harper, Danielle has received awards for Perfect Attendance, Student of the Month and Honor Roll.  Danielle will attend Northern Illinois University major in Nursing.  Her long term goal is to become a Pediatrician.




Jesseca Rhymes

  Currently attends Queen of Peace High School in Burbank, IL.  She plans to attend a four year university and major in Speech Pathology.  Jesseca is a member of New Vision of Faith Ministries.  Jesseca enjoys praise dancing. At Queen of Peace, she is an active member of the Student Council and The National Honor Society.  She is also a Student Ambassador and writer for the school newspaper.  Upon college graduation, Jesseca plans to pursue a career as a Speech Therapist.





 Ashley M. Scarborough

  Currently is a Biology major attending the University of Illinois at  Springfield.       She is a member of the V.I.P. Gospel Choir and mentor in the Big Brother Big Sister Mentoring Program.  Ashley is an avid dancer who was a lead Praise Dancer at her church as well as working with the Children’s Division at Oakdale Covenant Church.  Because of her love for children, Ashley plans to have a career in Psychology, Pediatrics or Child Therapy. .
